Reading through Behance's twitter posts, I stumbled across this website:

It's a website that focuses on design in business, and is based on the saying "Genius is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration" said by Edison.

I cannot believe how helpful the tips section is, and hoping that I can start being more productive from taking up the advice. The article about perfectionism is probably the biggest eye opener. While I do believe in deadlines and always meet them when set infront of me, I work myself silly trying to clean up everything and lose focus on the big picture sometimes.

Extreme Origami

With my recent website theme change to origami and plants, I did some research into some interesting origami figures to use for my background, and I stumbled upon this beast. "Surely, this could not be a single sheet of paper!" I thought to myself, but sure enough it is. Taking 40 hours or so over several months, this pieces was done by Satoshi Kamiya.

Glory! Isn't it just glorious? The Lightscribe didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped but it's still there and looks alright. Turns out those sample images for Lightscribe are done at a setting that takes about twice as long to burn. Paranoia's coat in the left DVD is meant to be black :( Oh well, I know for next time I guess.

To make the foam cover I got some square hollow aluminium pipe and hacksawed a section off to make a stamp. I then measured to my best ability where the squares should go and hammered them into the foam. The top creamy layer was made using white bathroom sealant. Thanks to Game for giving me the lovely white DVD cover! You're awesome *thumbs up*. Shame on you JB :(

Also, the DVD cover design! It's a white DVD case with waffle paper for the covers, like an ice cream sandwich ^^ planning to do something fancy with white silicon up the top too!

The original idea was to have the waffle paper on the outside, however it'll depend on what sort of materials I'm able to get on whether it'll just be a jacket sleeve or a nice embossed surface. The actual "Ice Cream" label will be placed in the insert and a window will be cut out of the waffle. I'm thinking foam might do the trick for the cover!

Things I wish I knew before I started this course

At least half your work time is spent dealing with software crashes.
About 10% of your work time is spent dealing with lost or missing files.
About 25% of your work time is spent trying to convert your files to a format that your software will like
Only 15% of your time is actually spent getting work done.
Formats that one type of software likes will not be liked by other programs.
Your files will NEVER be in the right format.
Adobe cleanscript is going to be your closest friend for the rest of your life. Get acquainted.
Your actionscript will NEVER "just work". In fact, you'll thoroughly check your code about 3 or 4 times before you notice that missing semicolon. Sometimes, Flash just wants a restart. Kinda like a memory enema.
Owning a second computer is a viable way of occupying yourself while you reboot, reinstall your software, or wait for that neverending render to finish.
Never leave your computer unsupervised to batch render. When you come back from that walk, you'll find that your render never made it past frame 1 of file 1.
You will spend a lot of your time at MLIA or Icanhascheezburger.com while waiting for your other computer to reboot, reinstall that software, or waiting for that neverending render to finish.
Your persistence in troubleshooting on the Adobe help centre website may not pay off in the end.
No one on the internet knows how to fix your problem, unless you spend 2 hours searching.
Half of what you will be paid for is learning how to get around your software's major bugs.

The list could go on. In fact, as I learn to grin and bear the numerous Adobe Premiere crashes that I've had to endure while doing one of my projects, I'll think of many, many more.

Cheats and hax

So I'm rapidly running out of time, back to the blocking out idea! The people in the courtyard area are currently static, but hopefully I'll have time to animate atleast a couple of them pointing and gasping. Not for now though, still lots to do! Will need to leave this project sitting for a while, have to start editing my digital a/v project!

Ugh. Been up to 2 mins for a while now but I've been going back and filling in some gaps. So far I'm limited by my ability to do incredibly repetitive tasks, like dressing each of the walking models. Doing the first lot walking along the train station was ok but now... Have to do other angles for standing around the Superhero when he lands. Ugh. Considering just doing plain static cutouts until I actually get the whole thig blocked out, ones that would be good enough if I ran out of time. Realistically though, the crowds are the most difficult part of this project due to the sheer number of people, but the 30 second fight scene shouldn't be *too bad* given I'll be templating from a fight in a game. Just a matter of copying the animations!

Another 30 seconds blocked out! Things that need to be done:

People added to platform and trains. Working on this now! Five womens' outfits are done and walking, just need the mens' and childrens' done.
Industrial scene added above buildings at fly-up scene. I'm not sure how much people will notice they're missing right now but for accuracy it's probably best
Ice cream man needs some tweaking. His eyes float across the screen too early and you don't get to read the phone screen for very long, so it needs to trail up towards the sky a bit.

The rest are just other small tweaks which aren't as important as getting the blocking out done now, but I'll hopefully have time to pretty it up further when the basics are done.

Mr Paranoia and Ice Cream Superhero

OMG! What we've been waiting for! Full body shots of our protagonist and antagonist! Enjoy :>

I like the small changes to Mr Paranoia: He has plaguebringer-like hands and a deathly awkward look about him. I've also decided he no longer needs feet, even though he appears to walk. It gives him a ghostly presence. Ice Cream Superhero's legs on the front shot need a bit of work... but still not bad. Eating the icecream when flying is a nice touch.

Well, it's not pretty yet but I can see the basics getting fleshed out there! Noted problems:

Some buildings move too fast at the drop part
Need more industrial business behind the buildings (cut a bit short)
ice cream man needs a longer lead in before he messages the Ice Cream Superhero for help.

Other changes I'd like include animated people in the buildings (there's just static silhouettes right now, but it's good enough), and people getting on/off the train. Next I hope to fix the character walk cycles and drop lots of people on the platform!

When the real thing is underway, layering for parallax is going to be much more important! Playing World of Warcraft chews up a LOT of time. That's why this semester I decided to flat-out stop playing, I might decide to pick it up after the semester, but recently I've realised how many games I've missed over the last few years. To fix this problem, I've been taking up these missed games.

Psychonauts

Pretty much what Zero Punctuation said. I was especially impressed with the unique level design and witty portraits of society that this game made. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/2-Psychonauts for Zero Punctuation's take on it. If you enjoy good platforming, you'll enjoy this. It's really something unique and the art direction is something to really appreciate.

The other component of this "play games you missed while grinding XP and loots" is going back to the good ol' days of sega. One of my favourite games when sega was still cool was Ecco. I don't know why, I never could pass the thing, and only recently I worked out why: it's stupidly difficult. Not challenging, just ridiculous. I thought it was just because I was young. But no, it still managed to stump me today. The fun of being a dolphin somehow outweighs the frustration, and the length of the game was something to revel in given the usually short lengths of sega titles. As in, when I used to play it, I thought I was almost done. Recently I worked out that I was only about a third of the way there. Granted, the length of the game is somehow linked to how many times you need to do the same level again due to dying. My advice if you ever try this game: don't do it without a good emulator with save state and you'd probably want to hunt down a walkthrough for those ridiculous puzzles that you'll likely NEVER get. Or have patience. A lot of patience. In the smallest sense it's worth playing for the story (far fetched but atleast well developed) and for the experience of... being a dolphin. I guess.

Group project research: the Faerie

The Faerie are strong in great numbers. Their supportive enchantments aid their allies in creating an impregnable mesh in battle. Faeries are social, intelligent, magical, and spiritual, but weak in hand-to-hand combat, especially solo. Types of Faeries might include battle-mages (a type of melee spellcaster), priests, shapeshifters, and enchanters. Some images to inspire character design are shown. Group project research: the Hunter

When I envision the hunter as an ideal, I think of survivalists, of a race of beings living on the savage edge of humanity. Hunters are calculating and stealthy, striking only after hours of careful observation. The Hunter is resourceful, cunning, and brutal, but vulnerable to large scale attacks. Types of hunters might include snipers, trackers, spearmen, and quarterstaff bearers (experienced in melee using a quarterstaff). These images from Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath might be of some inspiration for character design: The sniper from Team Fortress 2 kinda follows this style too.

The story

The Story
Mr Paranoia wants to keep the city living in fear. Fear of interaction, fear of individuality, and fear of fun. He does this by implanting threatening thoughts into people’s heads, using threatening gazes and whispers. This keeps the people in fear. There can be many copies of Mr Paranoia in any given area. The Icrecream Superhero, on the other hand, wants the world to lighten up and have fun, as he thinks it’s not natural for people to live in fear. In order for the icecream superhero to do this, he needs to expose the cloaked Mr Paranoia, baring his vulnerable identity for all to see, and they will realise they do not need to fear something they know, and can overcome this with fun and human kindness.

The Script
* Dark & depressing urban environment, rain, people looking around scared. Train station, tall looming buildings. Camera descends from the smog in the air down into the trainstation environment. Most of the scene colours are extremely washed out or almost black and white.
* Mr Paranoia among the crowd, peeping in and out of areas on the screen, there are many copies of him. He whisper’s in someone’s ear “you’re going to get what’s coming”(synchronised to the song). Person becomes wary and whimpers, but continues on his journey along the platform. Camera follows person.
* Person struggles with paranoid thoughts 'icecream is going to save the day again' (song lyrics). Focus turns to an icecream stand which shines with heavenly light. Camera flies up into the clouds, sky is brilliant pink and blue, clouds resemble vanilla icecream, beautiful snowy wonderland. The Icrecream superhero flies by, his face stern with pride. But he senses wrong in the world below, and looks down to witness the doom and gloom. He strokes his chin for a moment in contemplation, wondering what he can do.
* The Icecream Superhero descends from the sky, a small child on the street points in awe as he flies by. The crowd around fixate on the Icecream Superhero as he lands in a circular courtyard nearby the trainstation. He starts handing out icecream (obviously in a super cool fashion like magicks!).Patches of brilliant sun begin to shine onto the world below, revealing brilliant colour. People begin to look happy.
* Mr Paranoia catches sight of the Icecream Superhero while hiding behind a building, and cowardly flings a knife at him. It grazes his shoulder in slow motion. The crowd is shocked and panicked. After a moment’s pause, the Icecream Superhero chases after Mr Paranoia. He finds Mr Paranoia on a top of a building. (insert epic battle scene).
* (mid battle) cut scene to the Icecream Superhero dancing with two citizens under a disco ball 'I don't need a number, I just wanna dance with my shirt off, dance with my shirt off' (song lyrics).
* (Dramatic fight end here!) Mr Paranoia is defeated, and the sun shines brightly as Mr Paranoia turns to dust and flies away in the wind. Freed from the hidden Mr Paranoia, the crowd cheer and the children play. (heartfelt ending here!). The scene is now shown in full colour and everyone is super happy.

That's a rough outline of the story. The official storyboard isn't yet ready for public eyes, but it'll go up as soon as it's ready. In the mean time, enjoy this animated gif of one of the children spinning! (click to see spinning goodness)

Artwork

Preliminary artwork. I'll likely use these as finals but they're up for scrutiny. The idea is for the crowd of adults and children to look like they're from the same depressed collective, moving like drones through the crowd. The Ice cream Superhero and Mr Paranoia, however, look far more natural and have smooth flowing lines like the artwork found in oldschool comic books. Rectangular eyes are a style feature to help with expressions. I think they work very effectively at making the crowd look robotic yet hopeful.

I just realised I haven't really explained the story yet either, the storyline and storyboard will follow shortly and things should start to make more sense.

New Project 2 concept (to be reviewed for approval)

Muscles- Icecream is a snapshot of behaviour in society today. The song deals with issues surrounding social expectations, awkwardness, silence, paranoia, fear, anxiety, hope, identity, happiness, and kindness. I want to create a short animation that deals with these themes and is synchronised to the song.

The animation will draw out the themes and issues dealt with in the song. The intention is to create a highly polished animation that makes commentary on society today, but also appears fun and glossy. The biggest theme present will be of superheroes and villains. Most of all, the animation sets out to answer the questions: how does icecream save the day, and how did it save the day last time? The style will have this bubblegum-gloss to it with shiny vector shapes and bright colours, but also have this uneasy undertone of repression. This will be achieved mostly by designing the crowd of people wandering the streets to appear cute and glossy, while also looking confused and sad. Exaggeration will be another key tool in portraying the issues dealt with in the song, using exaggerated facial expressions and features.

Here's a small sample of animation, forgive me if it turns out a bit stutterly but I've recently had this revelation that *movieclips shouldn't be used for animation because AVIs don't record nested timelines, only Quicktime*. Well, I guess better late than never... I'll be doing this in After Effects anyways. The clip gives a small taste of what to expect from the concept of "Transitional Animation".

Some of the colours were distorted in the export process, and they should look a bit more natural when it comes to production (ie, the ant one is not really that bright).

Project 3 concept

Concept: “reflections”

Reflection is a metaphor for looking back on one’s past, evaluating and summing up one’s work and life, to see how far they actually have come. In the context of the studio exhibition:

Reflection seeks to examine and explore the journey taken through our time at Monash, and to predict where that path may take us.

Using dreamlike imagery, I plan to create an animation that explores the metaphor of reflection. To further reinforce this concept, I plan to use actual reflections to scatter parts of the animation around the gallery space, making these reflections an extension of the animation itself. Careful planning into what parts of the animation are being reflected and where will be explored. Reflective surfaces and their properties will also be researched, so that unique and interesting patterns may be made using reflective properties.

The animation style should be dream like, like a distant memory. There will be a strong emphasis on transitional animation, for example, following a bird flying which leads us to the ground which leads us to watching flowers, the flowers take flight and take us elsewhere etc. Another example of this type of animation is Ultralove Ninja by MK12 Studios.

New logo

I probably should have mentioned that I've come up with a logo concept for the box design too, so here it is. I'd like to enhance this further during production by making the reflection coming off a ripple of water which would probably require some 3D rendering. The box design itself I want to look like a dark and foreboding jungle, catching only small glimpses of figures in the dark, like the viewer is being stalked. The advertising should also follow this theme. I think it also kind of has an alien unnatural feel to it which creates the sort of mystery I'm after.

The Map

Here's a prototype map for the manual when the project is undertaken next semester. I hope to pretty it up with some nice graphics when it comes time to create the manual. An interactive map for the launch website is also being considered, with the ability to zoom in and view details, and to give a small blurb on each land.

Below also is a revised edition of the creature evolution chart. This new chart shows the actual scale of each animal, and has revised evolutions (instead of a crocodile we now have a Komodo Dragon, and the Efl Owl will be the first iteration of the bird species, evolving into a highly aerial seabird the Sooty Tern, so that the Arctic fox and Tern can share the arctic tundra's environment as they would in the natural world).

Some early concept artwork for character evolution. I quite like how expressive the dog and cat families can be but having some issues caracaturing the bird and reptile family. More to come when I've completed the reptile section (deciding between a komodo dragon-like creature or a crocodile!)

The main pattern emerging is each species is evolving from a scavenging creature to a predator, making the evolutionary process far more rewarding. Because of this I don't plan at this time to add a herbivore species for play.

here's a basic oultine of how the volution of each species would work, with each iteration enhancing the abilities of its predecessor, and gaining extra abilities. These iterations do need further research before finalisation, and I have yet to decide whether specialisation will be available (ie, a cat that specialises in, for example, stealth, may evolve into a panther, whereas a cat that specialises in speed may evolve into a cheetah). It is also not clear whether each final evolution will end up being an apex predator (have no major predators) or will still need to defend itself against such apex predators, but I would assume any such apex predator would be too overpowered to be a played character. I am considering adding extra iterations in between so that players find more variety in levelling up. Tasks at the highest trophic level to strengthen your pack will also be required to establish your place in the ecosystem.

Project 2 summary

Project Title: WILD
Genre: massively multiplayer online role playing game
Scope: Pre-production, concept art, story & lore, environment design, character design, promotional material
WILD is a new MMO concept that explores the natural order of wildlife. Both educational and recreational, the aim of WILD is to create an online ecosystem where players can experience first-hand how an ecosystem functions. Animal families, evolution of those families, and survival of that species (including habitat) will be examined. In essence, the game would be a mix of SPORE and a basic MMO like World of Warcraft. The aim of the game is NOT to evolve into a tribal stage, but simply for your chosen evolutionary line to strengthen and possibly specialise.

Basic gameplay would require a player to first choose and customise a species for play. Once in the world, the player would need to complete certain tasks in order to survive and grow. One of the biggest challenges for such an MMO as WILD is the lack of customisation available due to animals simply being unadorned with anything but their natural features. I plan to exaggerate the ability to change and shape these features (ie, markings, horns, feathers, etc) so that the player feels their creation is truly their own, but placing restrictions on these features so that the family of species that a player is playing does not stray too far. Another major challenge is the reward system: Survivability doesn’t seem like a great reward when completing tasks compared to some other MMOs, where items and currency make a more satisfying reward. A reward system that could be put in place could be gaining special abilities, the ability to add NPC characters to your pack (ala SPORE style), or special markings that give your character unique passive abilities (much like the recently added glyph system to World of Warcraft).

As your character does more and more tasks, your character will grow. Once your character reaches maturity, you have the option of moving to the next area, requiring your character to evolve. This would give your character the ability to learn more skills, have more customisation options, and to gain more strength and survivability. For example, an evolutionary species step might be from being a small feral cat to being a lion (but of course there would be many more evolutionary steps in between).

Supanova 2009

For this year I only managed to go for the Saturday, but still managed to get in a couple of seminars and trawl through the mountains and mountains of pop culture merch in my short time there. I think the number of cosplayers probably increased by around 100% which was scary (that said I do admire the effort put in and most of them are well done).

Jhonen Vasquez, author of comics such as Squee!, I Feel Sick, and animator of the infamous Invader Zim (pictured left). His general speech was about letting go of his past work and not being a Hot-Topic cliche` fanboy/fangirl, of which there was an unfortunate number of in the crowd. After the warning not to ask stupid questions, most people obeyed and asked atleast not-too-retarded questions and we all got some valuable feedback.

Next stop was to listen to actor Richard Hatch in the show Battlestar Galactica (both versions!) and what the parallels and differences are between each version. He plays Tom Zarek in the 2004 series and Captain Apollo in the 1978 series. I would have stayed for Katee Sackhoff's (actor who plays Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in the 2004 series) talk after but they (the studio? who knows) wanted us to hand in our cameras and mobiles to staff and vacate the building, pushing everyone in the room to the back of the line to which I refused.

Also it turns out Hayden Panettiere looks about as airbrushed and flawless in real life as she does on screen... Well, at least from a distance, I didn't bother getting signings or anything :>

I hereby give you... A parody! Kind of a mix between that glowing baby in 2001 Space Odyssey and disgustingly cute popular culture (I was blindingly reminded of our cute culture from all the cosplay at this year's Supanova).

Needs some fine tuning but I think it has the impact that I'm after. And if you're wondering, yes that IS fried chicken...

I'm getting rather sick of Blogger. I've had to make a new post just so this text doesn't get squashed between the images in the last post below and the right boundary. But here's what I was going to say below:

Animatic for Project 1 (and a small rant about my deep hatred of video formats)

I figured instead of screwing around trying to put up frames and frames of my storyboard that a Flash animatic might be easier. Note that it is the first version and some tweaking needs to be done, particularly at the end where they're all cheering (that part isn't so clear yet)

Also I apologise for using Quicktime format, I realise this greatly increases file size for web but after screwing around with Flash trying to get it into a nice exportable FLV with a media bar, then attempting some conversion using Adobe's lovely new media encoder, and doing so unsuccessfully thanks to a plethora of errors, I gave up and you get 16mb of glory. It's either this or no media bar for now. If I actually manage to work out what the hell is going wrong, I'll put up a nice small FLV.

PS. Turns out blogger doesn't like the audio to my upload, it probably thought a really neat way of dealing with file size would be to JUST STRIP THE AUDIO COMPLETELY WITHOUT TELLING ME. Good going *golf clap*.

Project 1 Concept

Project Outline: Create a short animation (one minute) that deals with issues surrounding the topic "Post-human"

After reading the article in the reader for this subject "Toward embodied virtuality", my initial perception on what it means to be post-human had been drastically altered. When we consider the term "post-human", frightening visions of loss of human values and hostile technological takeover are probably what first comes to mind, but there's a far more subtle side to the issue: the mentality of the individual today. Many theorists argue that we are already in the post-human phase, and puzzled by this concept, I read on. When it was explained, I realised that everything about our visions of post-human stem from this one single concept: post-human deals with the human ability to conceptualise the mind separate from the body.

Using this as a basis, I began to see why we are already in a state of being post-human. One particular area of note is the world of Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games, and the focus of my proposal is Eve online: a universe of players who fly virtual spaceships in gangs of hundreds, maybe thousands of players. The corporation (a large group of players under one title, known in other MMOs as a guild) that I find most interesting within the game is a corporation called Goonfleet: whose main policy seems to be to ruin the game for the rest of the Eve community, mainly through griefing (see points two and three of the first definition here). The reason Goonfleet are of particular interest is because of the community created outside of the game: on their teamspeak channels, there are reading rooms, music rooms, fleet operation rooms, and other types of social rooms, with around 500 people at a time listening in.

The concept for this animation itself is to take a recording from a fleet operation on teamspeak, in particular the Titan Kill event, and synchronise an animation to it, but not of the actual event: of the actual people playing in their home environment. The concept behind this is to show how absurdly involved the post-human can become in an online environment, leaving their bodies behind in the "real world". This in itself shows exactly how the post-human has become engaged in a completely global society, using only an online persona and conscious to interact with other human beings, and the body has merely become an instrument to interact, much like any other tool we might use.
